March at the Library

women's history month

Beginning in 1978, educators across the country began incorporating history lessons focused on women in educational curricula. Over the next few years, Women’s History Week became a regular celebration during the month of March. All across the country, the year 1981 marked the first joint Congressional Resolution co-sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Rep. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD); this declared Women’s History Week to be nationally recognized. This much lauded, nationally celebrated week, became an entire month and March has been recognized as Women’s History Month since that time.

Acquaint or reintroduce yourself to important contributions of women in American History. This month at the Library we are celebrating Women’s History Month.

dr. suess' birthday

Prior to 1937, dry and uninteresting beginner books failed to spark children’s interest. In response to this, two publishing companies joined forces and asked Theodor Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) to write a beginner’s book using 220 new readers' vocabulary words. The result was "The Cat in the Hat". Many more children’s books came quickly thereafter and Dr. Seuss soon became synonymous with early reading. This icon of rhyme and rhythm made significant contribution to the expansion and development of children’s literature over the past 60 years.

At the Library, celebrate the birthday of one of the most famous and prolifi c children’s authors in the U.S. Enjoy Dr. Seuss’ birthday with his movies featuring some of his most well-loved stories.

gardens

Seasons fly by here in Guam, but gardening is always en vogue. Even gardeners with a “brown” thumb can learn the skills to grow a functional garden, right here at Andersen AFB Library. Container gardens are a fun and easy way to try your hand at flower growing, or cultivating your very own fresh herbs.

This month learn about landscaping, flower gardening, and tropical plants at the Library. If you would like to beautify your yard permanently, do not forget to check with the Housing office to get your authorization before you dig! Happy gardening!

DID YOU KNOW...?

Theodore Geisel (a.k.a. Dr. Seuss) won an Academy Award for “Best Documentary” for a training film he made with the U.S. Army called "Design for Death" during World War II.

Wheat is the most widely grown plant in the world. It has been cultivated for more than 7,000 years in every continent except Antarctica.

The Compass plant (Silphium laciniatum) was given its name because its lower leaves tend to line up in a North/South direction.
