SEPTEMBER EVENTS

LABOR DAY

Labor Day is celebrated to honor the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations of local communities. It originated in New York on September 5, 1882 following the guidelines set out by the Central Labor Union. Two years later, the first Monday of September was designated as the annual day of celebration. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers. Soon Congress passed an act authorizing the observance of the holiday in the District of Colombia and all territories making Labor Day a Federal Holiday. Labor Day is celebrated nationwide with parades and festivals and often marked by nationally televised speeches by prominent union officials, educators, and industrialists. Labor Day acknowledges and celebrates the commitment and dedication of the United States workforce.

VO-TECH SKILLS

The Base Library celebrates the American Dream by supporting the efforts of the working public. Vocational Technical skills are developed through career and technical education which prepares people for jobs based in manual fields related to technology and technique. Chefs, machinists, electricians, and cosmetologists are just a few of the vital services these dedicated professionals offer. Come to the Library and read about a new skill. Try your hand at home haircutting, a new recipe, or marvel at the internal parts of an internal combustion engine - if only to more fully appreciate the skills and efforts of the trained professionals who offer these services.
