SEPTEMBER FITNESS SPOTLIGHT: RUNNING
Why Run?
The reasons why people go running usually fall into three
categories: Running for Health Benefits, Running
for Weight Loss, and Running for Social Benefits.
Running for health benefits is a positive thing -
studies that show that it reduces
a person's chances of getting everything from
the common cold to cancer. It is one of the best
aerobic exercises because it promotes physical
conditioning of the heart and lungs. It helps to
reduce stress and even mild depression. Running
also increases bone density which becomes
increasingly important as we age.
Running for weight loss is one of the most common reasons
why people begin a running program.
It is a popular way to burn off calories which in
turn helps to drop weight. Running also helps to
increase your resting metabolic rate which allows
you to burn calories even when you are resting!
When combined with a healthy diet, running will
help you to look and feel better.
Running for social benefits is easy due to the many running clubs and charity races that one
can participate in. Some people even travel the
world to participate in running events.
